Review of Top 5 DVD Ripper searched in Google

Recently, when I visit Yahoo answers, I found that so many questions are similar to each other. All of those questions are about how to convert DVD to mp4, to avi, to iPod, to iPhone, to… etc. And at the same time, the answers also have the striking similarities because all of them just recommend the products. I'm afraid that they even didn't read the questions carefully. I think it’s really so necessary to make a comparison of different types of DVD Ripper so that we can select one according to our demand.

Today I search “DVD Ripper” in Google, and pick up 5 types of software which searched most. They are Magic DVD Ripper, ImToo DVD Ripper, Aimersoft DVD Ripper, Leawo DVD Ripper and DVDFab.

All right, let's get it start. At first, when we open this software, its UI (user interface) gives us the primary impression just like person and person. For me, I can’t help myself to be addicted to some beautiful or awesome UIs even though the functions of this software are extremely fussy and memory-wasted; iTunes and Zune are the best evidence in my computer.

UI

Among those interfaces, you can find that only 3 types carry with preview windows. Actually, Magic DVD Ripper also has preview windows. There is a button on the right side of “subtitle”. You can click it and then preview and select a segment to rip. But I really can't find this function on DVDFab. Refer to the whole design, I have to say Leawo DVD Ripper has better color scheme, cuter icons and briefer operation, is match my taste most.

So the first step had finished. We should go deeper to operate those DVD Rippers, get to know the features and capabilities.

Features
  1. Rip DVD to popular video and audio formats. Magic support less formats. Leawo, Aimersoft and ImToo support the formats which can replay on the newest devices. Leawo can rip DVD to MKV and DPG format.
  2. Support the selection of subtitle and audio. Magic, Leawo & ImToo can select the angle of video if your DVD has different angles.
  3. Leawo, Aimersoft, DVDFab and ImToo support to convert DVD with NVIDIA® CUDA™ and the speed is much faster than common conversion.
  4. Only Leawo and Magic can't add iso file to convert, but Aimersoft can't read some iso files and told you this file is invalid.
  5. Leawo and DVDFab has the function of DVD Copy with quality lossless. Actually DVDFab looks like a packaging product. You can find all of DVD Copy, Blu-ray Copy and Ripper, video converter and DVD Ripper in one interface. Magic supports to split DVD 9 into 2 DVD 5.
  6. Leawo, Aimersoft and ImToo can display the captures of DVD and select any capture to output, but only Leawo default display captures, another 2 need to open this selection by yourself.
  7. Leawo and ImToo own greater video editor just like crop, trim DVD and add effect on output video.
  8. Leawo, Aimersoft and ImToo can rip DVD to HD video.
  9. Leawo, Aimersoft and ImToo can snapshot to get the movie image for the video on iPod, iPhone, and PSP, etc.
  10. Magic and DVDFab do not support to shut down your computer when the mission was completed. On contrary, ImToo support the function of system power management. You can order your computer to shut down, sleep or standby. But if you choose shut down, your computer will always shut down when every mission was completed, the same as sleep and standby, till you change the selection.
From this list we can find that Leawo , Aimersoft and ImToo are full-featured. Those features are very similar and keep with time. But some unique functions also can shining you just like Leawo can convert DVD to MKV and ImToo support system power management.

Magic just can be used only as ripping and no more functions. The operation of Magic is just as brief as its UI. But compare to another 4 types, this advantage is not so obvious because each type of DVD Ripper has brief operation except DVDFab. When we take the first sight of DVDFab, we think it got easy operation. But things don not like what we thought. This type needs more professional operation. When you input a DVD file, it will ask you which region of this DVD. If you need customize your code of video, you should go to the common setting.

The last aspect we need to compare is the quality of video which we concerned most.  Right now I can't add on the video on, so I snapshot the image of video which convert from the same DVD with 5 DVD Ripper trail version.

Quality and Speed
Video info:
MPEG4 Video (H264) 720x480 29.96fps
Audio: AAC 48000Hz stereo 128Kbps
Video resolution: 720 x 480
Magic DVD Ripper: 6 minutes for 2 minutes length video
ImToo DVD Ripper: 4 minutes for 3 minutes length video
Leawo DVD Ripper: 6 minutes for half and 5 minutes length video
Aimersoft DVD Ripper: 6 minutes for half and 6 minutes video
DVDFab: unknown. Collapse with countless times, even I tried XP and Windows 7.
From those images we can find video of Magic is out of shape. ImToo and Leawo really have good quality of image. But the watermark of Leawo is too large and made me really want to own a paid version. Aimersoft has the fastest speed to convert DVD, but we can find the obvious ripple on the snapshot besides that nice trail watermark.

If you magnify all of those images, you will find Leawo and ImToo are better.
That’s all of test and review by me. OK, make a conclusion. Magic, $34.97, has brief UI and brief operation but less functions and output formats. DVDFab has the full functions for convert and copy DVD and video, countless collapse and price of $50. Aimersoft, ImToo and Leawo has nice functions for ripping DVD. But Aimersoft, $35.95, need to fix the problem of output image; ImToo, $39.95, has some useless functions; and Leawo, $29.95, need to support iso file and add more useful functions.
